“three identities which intertwine as one”

The mixed-use program in Bessenveld is the first phase of a two-phase development plan in Diegem, Machelen. The program includes a hotel, office space and commercial spaces.

The site is located in Diegem-Machelen, close to the Zaventem airport, NATO and the R0 ring road. The plot is currently a vacant lot with a slope of no less than eight meters.

Its strategic location near the airport and ring road and thus its regional and international accessibility lends itself to a landscape of large-scale buildings along Holidaystraat and smaller-scale volumes along the Victor Servrancksstraat.

The area has systematically developed since the 1970s into a monotonous agglomeration of office buildings.

Thinking Process

Integrating the new project into the neighborhood

1. Creating an accessible, approachable building with all the necessities for the temporary residents.

2. Allowing the buildings to interact with the environment and create a neighborhood that is lively even after working hours.

3. Limiting car traffic & providing an underground parking, allowing above ground greenery to be introduced.

4. Incorporating new functions: temporary housing for young, international workers and more individual and personalized workplaces.

The identity of each of the volumes is shown through its design and materiality. The three towers on Holidaystraat are strongly committed to becoming a new landmark in the neighborhood.

They all follow the same concept, a modular structure with infill panels.

In contrast, the volume on Victor Servranckxstraat, subtly and playfully seeks to approach the quiet residential environment with a composition of balconies in a brick facade.
